Not only is Wolf Trap the favorite outdoor-concert venue for Washingtonians—although it’s located three miles beyond the Beltway, in the Virginia burbs, you can reach it by Metro and a dedicated shuttle bus—the complex is, in fact, a unit of the birthday-celebrating National Park system. (The only one in the entire country that’s devoted to the performing arts.) Who knew?
This month, the lineup at Wolf Trap is just as diverse as the nation’s capitol, ranging from Lyle Lovett and Emmy Lou Harris to Wynton Marsalis to Ira Glass (speaking, not singing, we presume) to the National Symphony Orchestra with Seth MacFarlane—and the Family Guy guy will be singing!
You can bring your own picnic (wine, beer, and other spirits are totally okay), buy supplies on site, or eat at the park’s Ovations restaurant (white tablecloths and all). Or combine all of the above by ordering an Ovations picnic basket that’ll be waiting for you at the park when you get there.
