What’s making us happy today
Goth buildings. Gargoyles and October go together like tricks and treats. The Washington National Cathedral has 112 of these spooky stone structures, which, practically speaking, serve as the guttering system. Go on a self-guided tour of the gargoyles and grotesques, one of which is Darth Vader. If angels are more your style, the cathedral has 288 of them and shows them off in December.
Pumpkin mania. While Rodoni Farms in Santa Cruz is open year-round, the time to visit is when the pumpkin patch is open for business: October. Families make the trip to the 30 organic acres to choose one of the varieties, such as Cinderella, the white polar bear, the blue-gray jarrahdale, and howden (perfect for the jack-o’-lantern).
