The (Second) Smallest Church in the World

Just because the house of worship is teeny doesn’t mean the prayers are small.

Way before Tiny House Nation and Tiny House Hunters, Catholics were building a tiny house of their own. Laguna Beach’s Saint Francis by the Sea is a 1,008-square-foot space for worship, recognized in a not-so-teeny way by the Guinness Book of World Records as the smallest church on the planet.

That was 1980. While it’s no longer the smallest church (it was dethroned by Cross Island Chapel, a 28-square-foot church in New York built nine years later), it still holds the title of second smallest. Squeeze inside for Sunday mass, every week at 9:30 a.m. There are 42 seats.
