The Open Road

What’s making us happy this week?

The Open Road /ˈōpən rōd /

A place of freedom and joy that is well traveled in the summer. A few other definitions:

Betty Jane. That’s the name of a restored school bus in Santa Cruz, with upholstered seats and living walls. Betty Jane runs the Brew Cruz, a tour to three craft breweries.

The Divvy. The baby-blue Chicago city bike has been catapulted to new heights this summer with 476 stations. Pedal, then dump the bike at a station and hail a cab.

Concours d’LeMons. Pintos, Edsels, Chevettes, Trabants, and other infamous automotive lemons, gather on the Monterey Peninsula on August 15—though we’re not sure how they get there. Tin can interior and exteriors compete for prizes like “Most Dangerous” and “Worst of Show.”

Foodtripping. The act of planning your road trip plate by plate with TV Food Maps, a website and app that stores which places are mentioned in popular food shows such as Man Finds Food, Taco Trip, and Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives.
