Oakland’s new funplex isn’t only about the burgers, or the bocce, or the bowling, or the beer garden. There’s also TVs and video games and margaritas.
Clocking in at 50,000 square feet of space, Oakland’s Plank could be considered a massive romper room for adults. But that wouldn’t be quite accurate, since children are also welcome… as long as it’s before 9 p.m.
In fact, not only is everyone invited to this Jack London location, but nearly anyone can be entertained: couples on a date (the fire pits), teenage rebels (video games typically work), the mature crowd (they should head up to the 21-and-over Boardroom for a Manhattan), beer geeks (the beer garden serving from 42 taps), sports fans (TVs, basketball hoops), the adventurous (bocce ball), and the hungry (chorizo fundido, salt pork ramen, and burgers).
The impatient, however, might not fare so well. On weekend nights, there’s a line to get in. A 90-minute wait to bowl almost any night of the week isn’t unusual. Plank, which opened about six months ago, is playing cruise director to many, while experimenting with an interesting new concept: It’s the new movie night.
