Getting Big Air

At Sierra-at-Tahoe, the Huck Cup opens the month (March 3 & 4), where utter lunatics (that is, freeskiers and snowboarders) do daredevil leaps off Huckleberry Canyon’s rocks and cliffs. Take the Grandview Express quad lift up to the top of Huckleberry Mountain to watch the thrills—the “course” is just 5 minutes’ hike from the top of the lift, and from 360° Smokehouse BBQ, and the Grandview Lodge. (Maybe you should make a slight detour for lunch—you know, to keep up your strength.)

Should you feel inspired to try your own hucking, the backcountry gates to the Canyon are open to civilians when conditions permit, and when there’s not an event on, of course. And should you be thinking, “Huckleberry hucking? Heck, no!”—after all, the Canyon’s not patrolled—well, it’s perfectly legitimate to head back down on the lift to Sierra’s far less terrifying, but still enormously fun, Blizzard Mountain tubing zone.
