In an era when pro sports seem to be all about the money, and not so much about the regular fans, the perfect antidote is to go local. In 2015, South Lake Tahoe gained its own Western States Hockey League team, the Tahoe Icemen. The league’s official goal is to prepare junior players for collegiate competition, but it also means that at the end of a long day skiing, you might just be able to catch a real live hockey game down at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena and cheer for players who can actually hear you—trust us, it’s a lot more fun that shouting at a big-screen TV. On Friday mornings, you can even watch the guys practice (for free). And on those snowy days when it’s coming down too hard for you to skate outside at Heavenly, you can rent a pair of skates and brush up on your own puck-handling skills.
