After a number of locations in Virginia and beyond, Sugar Shack Donuts & Coffee has opened its first outpost in the nation’s capital, right in the hip Shaw neighborhood. Founded by a former fine-dining chef, Sugar Shack is a booming mini chain that hand rolls each donut and embraces fresh berries and apples. Some of the flavors are traditional—chocolate iced, cinnamon sugar—and others are appealingly offbeat, like pineapple Serrano, cucumber melon, and blackberry basil glazed. Glazed Granny Smith apple fritters provide an even homier, retro alternative. Open until 2 a.m. on the weekends, it encourages Midnight snacking in the company of whimsical chocolate sprinkles. Coffee is typically the go-to order at Sugar Shack, especially since the company started roasting its own quality beans in small batches over in Richmond. Soon, cocktails might be just as clamored for when Nocturne, like clandestine sister bar Captain Gregory’s tucked inside the Alexandria location, opens on the premises soon.
