Speak Up

Here’s what’s making us happy this week: Life is best served loud and lively.

Talking statues. The statues scattered across Chicago are now talking—for one year only, thanks to Statue Stories Chicago. Man with Fish, found outside the Shedd Aquarium, comes to life once you swipe a tag with your smartphone. Why, is that Steve Carell? Yes. Yes, it is.

Diary readings. Forget rom-coms. Instead relive your adolescence in front of a live audience. That’s the gist behind Mortified. Every second Friday at San Francisco’s DNA Lounge, willing volunteers stand in front of a crowd to read the most embarrassing excerpts from their younger years. Laughter really is the best therapy.

Loose lips sinks ships. Seven Seas Bar isn’t your normal dive bar with a pirate theme.  C’mon, this is Miami. There are tons of them. Right? Argh. Seven Seas ups the ante with karaoke. Just when you thought karaoke couldn’t get more embarrassing, you find yourself mimicking Jack Sparrow’s “A Pirate’s Life for Me.”

Mini me. The Maker Faire just spawned. The first Mini Maker Faire happens September 6 in San Jose’s History Park. Because once a year isn’t enough to grab genius items, like leather beer cozies from East West Leatherworks and, um, the yarn hat from the San Jose Museum of Quilt and Textiles. This can be your rehearsal for the big mama Maker Faire event in May.
