The Exploratorium at Pier 15, on San Francisco’s Embarcadero, is a dynamic laboratory uniting the themes of science and art while promoting curiosity and inquiry. In the different galleries, crawl and slide your way through the complete darkness of the Tactile Dome; peer through the curved Giant Mirror, which was procured from a NASA simulator, for a glimpse of the distorted, upside-down life; and enter the Monochromatic Room, where sodium vapor lamps emitting a single wavelength of light lend all objects a yellow hue and flashlights magically bring them into Technicolor. Among the kid-friendly exhibitions is WildCard, a collaboration with the Cardboard Institute of Technology, in which C.I.T. artists, with box cutters and glue guns in tow, conjure on-the-fly fantastical worlds of large cardboard structures, treating the paper just like sturdy plywood. Through September 4.
