Paradise Painted

She paints seashells by the seashore.

Our Artist in Residence, Megan Roy, dreams up creative projects inspired by our hotels. This time, it’s Shoreline Hotel Waikiki and that romantic, nostalgic island spirit: a freshly threaded floral lei… a glass of pineapple iced tea on a sun-drenched windowsill.

“I chose watercolors because the hotel (and the atmosphere in Hawaii in general) feels lighthearted and playful,” Megan says.

“Shoreline’s interior is full of rich turquoise, orange, and strawberry hues. That made it easy to choose a palette. I imagined a deep Hawaiian sunset reflecting those colors onto sand covered with different shells, and my subject revealed itself! I added a touch of gold afterwards, because metallics feel very modern to me.”
