On the Waterfront

What’s making us happy today?

A bell cart with bling. Yes, it’s National Bike Month, and cruising Laguna Beach is pure magic. Pacific Edge Hotel has channeled its Southern California heritage even further by adding “bikes of the sea” to its bell carts. The boards are from neighbor CA Surf Shop (Costa Azul surf shop). It’s a whimsical ode to the Pacific Ocean.

A floating museum. D.C. can’t quite claim the nation’s only White House—not when the USS Potomac is anchored in Oakland’s Jack London Square. The 165-foot presidential yacht of Franklin Delano Roosevelt has been dubbed the “Floating White House,” though the 1930s beauty had tumultuous times after its owner passed. It transformed from a site for hosting presidential strategy sessions to smuggling drugs to sinking off Treasure Island. The National Historic Landmark has since been restored to bring it back to its roots of being a vessel fit for a president and a king: Elvis Presley owned it for a spell. Walk in those famous footsteps for a 45-minute dockside tour led by a docent, or take a cruise around the Bay.
