Monterey On Display

The new HBO domestic-noir series Big Little Lies, which premiered February 19, was almost entirely filmed in the Monterey Bay area, and not surprisingly, such a setting has camera-hog tendencies—Highway One’s Bixby Bridge makes an appearance well before the likes of Reese Witherspoon—in fact, before Witherspoon’s name even appears in the opening credits!

Unfortunately, the famous coastal drive is currently closed to through traffic—Bixby’s sister span, the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge down in Big Sur, having decided to go walkabout during February’s rains—but you can still visit other locations in and around Monterey. The first episode’s post-school-drop-off scene, in which Celeste and Madeline grill newcomer Jane, was shot at Old Fisherman’s Wharf, but those outdoor tables belong to Paluca Trattoria, not a coffee house—if you want your morning’s dose of caffeine, continue down the wharf to the trendy Water & Leaves. Other filming sites you might recognize: Monterey’s Colton Hall; Lovers Point Park and Beach, in Pacific Grove; and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
