Eat, Drink, Play, Run

It’s been a tough time along the California coast this winter—sure, the rain was much needed, but too much of any good thing can turn into a crisis. Do your bit to help the region recover by not staying away. We’ve got a few events that should help sweeten the deal.

Through April 2: In downtown Monterey itself, the NextGen Jazz Festival brings together the nation’s best young musicians to compete and collaborate—get a sneak peek of what the future holds…

April 8 & 9: …or relive the past, at Pacific Grove Good Old Days . Officially, this is an arts and crafts show, but in practice, it’s an old-fashioned fair, with rides and games and parades and music. (Of course, this being Grateful Dead country, their idea of “old-fashioned music” isn’t limited to barbershop quartets—it also includes also psychedelic jam bands.)

April 20–23: You’ve got your choice of ritzy dining in swanky surroundings or crazy riding on the top of a windswept plateau, as both the 10th annual Pebble Beach Food & Wine event and the Sea Otter Classic cycling extravaganza at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca are scheduled for this weekend. Spend a day eating and drinking at one and then the next day, burn off all those calories at the other.

April 30: Although the town of Big Sur has borne the brunt of the winter damage, the Big Sur International Marathon will be going on (more or less) as planned. The route itself wasn’t affected by the loss of the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge, though the race’s shuttle-bus drop-off points may have to be moved.
