5 Things To Do in South Lake Tahoe (In The Summer!)

It’s summertime, and the living is…well, not easy, unless you like hanging around in a hammock all day. Which might not be a bad thing, but you could do that at home! You’re in Tahoe, though, so the words you’re looking for are “rad” and “outdoors” and “adventure.”

1. Of course you’re going to go hiking, and our favorite route, going up Mount Tallac from the Tallac Trailhead, is just four miles up Highway 89 from South Lake Tahoe. The trail itself is a 9 mile out-and-back… or, to be more precise, an up-and-back-down. The payoff, though, includes fantastic views of Desolation Wilderness. (And dogs are welcome!)

2. You’re in the mountains, so bikes are another obvious choice. Don’t have your own squishy bike with you? Rent a full-suspension Giant Stance from South Shore Bikes and head to such local favorites as Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. If you’re a roadie, know that the South Shore stables contain some sweet Giant Defy demos too.

3. You’re on a lake, remember? Maybe it’s time to give stand-up paddle boarding a go. Lake Tahoe Boat Rides in Tahoe Keys Marina can set you up for a multiday rental, because the odds are pretty good you’re not going to want to give the board back at the end of the day. It’s that much fun.

4. If teamwork’s your thing, take out a double kayak out for a spin. (Not literally—that would be whitewater kayaking you’re thinking of.) Action Watersports rents doubles and singles by the hour from their Camp Richardson location.

5. Finally, don’t forget the retro, Rat Pack allure of waterskiing, and its modern cousin, wakeboarding. Though we’d definitely recommend taking real lessons, not just jumping in cold.
