Competitive painting? Yes! It may not be an Olympic sport, but the Laguna Plein-Air Arts Festival (October 8–16) does include a by-invitation-only event in which 35 landscape painters vie for prizes ($10,000 goes to the Best in Show), and not in their private studios, where no one can see them, but out in… plein air. All week, you can watch them do their thing in and around town. (Here’s a hot tip: If you’re looking for artists at work, the beaches are probably your best bet.)
