See The Bridge, And Art Too

Aided by a coalition of the Parks Service, the Presidio Trust, and the Golden Gate Parks Conservancy, gallery owner Cheryl Haines and the For-Site Foundation have come up with a worthy follow-up to the Ai Weiwei show on Alcatraz last year. Home Land Security, a new installation in the batteries of Fort Winfield Scott, high above the Golden Gate Bridge. Like many of the foundation’s earlier Presidio-based projects—Presidio Habitats, International Orange—this one is temporary; you have only until mid-December to see such thought-provoking, and just plain stunning, works as Tirtzah Bassel’s Concourse, a mural made entirely of colored duct tape; Mandana Moghaddam’s gorgeous footage of baggage cast upon the waters; the Propeller Group’s ballistics-gel masterpiece, à la Eadweard Muybridge, called AK-47 vs M16; and, most haunting of all, a collection of video works from the Bill Viola series Martyrs. Seeing these pieces in this site, an array of gun placements facing the Pacific, lends new resonance to the phrase “security theater.”
