Hawaii’s Very Local (& Cheap) Snack

The small bite, musubi, is a popular snack on the trails and on the beach.

To outsiders, it looks a lot like sushi. On a block of rice is a flat slab of grilled Spam, which is then wrapped in seaweed. Say aloha to the more-filling-than-it-looks Hawaiian bite known as musubi.

Best bet for great variety is Musubi Cafe Iyasume in Waikiki. Musubi comes with eggs, with cukes, with avo, with bacon, with shiso, or with ume (plum sauce). Take it to go. These treats have sustained many a hike and swim break.
