Although Hangar 1 has sold out of its much-touted, limited-run Fog Point vodka—yes, it really was made using distilled San Francisco fog—word is that the spirit is still to be found behind the bar at certain Bay Area restaurants, including Waterfront Hotel neighbor Haven. Or you could head to the source: the new tasting room at Hangar 1’s Alameda distillery, which occupies Building 22 of the island’s circa-1940s naval air station. This is where Caley Shoemaker, one of the few women in the business to become a head distiller, has her workshop—including her Pilot Still, where she experiments with small-batch vodkas like, well, Fog Point. The menu starts with the Boarding Lounge tasting session ($15 per person) in the steampunk-inspired visitors center, in which you’ll get to try some of her inventions, but to see inside the distillery itself, you’ll want to step up to the hour-long Business Class tour ($20) or First Class tour ($30), which takes you even deeper behind the scenes.
