Drawn to warm, bright colors coupled with a love of travel, we looked to artist Amber Thomas to illustrate a few of our favorite locals from coast to coast. Her preferred canvas? Antique globes. Here, Amber takes us through her art and her inspiration for capturing Ventana Inn & Spa in Big Sur, California.
What path brought you to art? What inspires you?
Art always seemed to sneak into my life in one way or another. Last June -with the encouragement of my husband and family- I jumped headfirst into making art for others. I’ve never been as inspired as I am by the stories and lives I get to participate in when working through commissioned pieces. The JDV pieces are no exception!
Ventana Inn & Spa is all about capturing an idyllic, calm moment in nature. How did you convey the spirit of Ventana?
The gorgeous flora of Big Sur was an obvious and easy inspiration. I’ve always been drawn to natural elements, colors, and textures so the nature of Ventana Inn as natural retreat afforded me so many opportunities to stretch my repertoire.
Describe your perfect weekend away.
In painting the Ventana Inn globe, I found myself (surprisingly) craving a weekend away in the woods with hiking boots, wine and smores. The idea of being out of cell phone service and consumed by nature makes my heart leap in my chest!
