Drawn to warm, bright colors coupled with a love of travel, we looked to artist Amber Thomas to illustrate a few of our favorite locals from coast to coast. Her preferred canvas? Antique globes. Here, Amber takes us through her art and her inspiration for capturing Hotel del Sol.
What path brought you to art? What inspires you?
Art always seemed to sneak into my life in one way or another. Last June -with the encouragement of my husband and family- I jumped headfirst into making art for others. I’ve never been as inspired as I am by the stories and lives I get to participate in when working through commissioned pieces. The JDV pieces are no exception!
Hotel del Sol is known for its colorful exterior, sunny vibes, and warm attitude. How did you convey the spirit of the Del Sol?
Bold and bright colors have always caught my attention with their spunk and bravery. Hotel del Sol, with it’s adventurous, retro-road trip vibe, immediately screamed to be the star of the show on a globe. The opportunity to showcase both San Francisco and hotel was the obvious route for the del Sol globe.
Describe your perfect weekend away.
I fell in love with San Francisco last October when I visited with my mom. The city is full of history, gorgeous architecture, and adventure. I have been dying to go back with my husband. Creating the Hotel del Sol globe only made those feelings more intense!
