On the grounds of what was once the Bordeaux-inspired Chateau Julien Wine Estate in Carmel emerged Folktale Winery & Vineyards in 2015. At this sustainable winery, with a 100 percent organically farmed vineyard, patrons come to ogle the cellar and barrel room and taste sparkling brut varieties, as well as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and bold, Rhône-style reds amid the great outdoors. They also stick around for charcuterie and truffle fries whipped up in the test kitchen with ingredients sourced from the Monterey Peninsula. Folktale doubles as a hub for activities like frequent live music performances from jazz to rock and invigorating Saturday-morning Yoga in the Vines sessions, too. Instructor Kate Balog from the esteemed Big Sur retreat center Esalen leads scenic, 90-minute classes in the Rose Garden. Post-Shevasana, linger in the Wine Garden for a glass of one of Folktale’s specialties.
