Flashback to Frisbees

The hippie movement was about more than sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll.

Ultimate Frisbee was once a counterculture sport. Ken Westerfield, a fan of the sport, moved to Santa Cruz in the ‘70s with one goal: to start up a Northern California flying disc championship. Plus, he wanted to perform cool Frisbee throwing tricks, like his knee-tuck behind-the-back number, pictured here.

He succeeded in both endeavors, founding Santa Cruz’s first Ultimate Frisbee team in 1977—a ragtag bunch known as Good Times, after the local paper that sponsored them.
