A Night on the Wharf

Feted stylishly by the Foo Fighters in mid-October, District Wharf is by no means a fait accompli. This is but the first phase of a project so massive that “pardon our progress” signs may linger till 2022. Still. You should go, because Washington, D.C.’s Southwest quadrant has largely been a lightly traveled piece of Potomac waterfront. It’s about to blow-up.

Here’s the quick and dirty of a few favorites:

A Beautiful Closet gives thought to all things needed to fill that oft-ignored spot in the home: expect jewelry, clothing, and shoes.

The ethereal landscapes and abstracts of artist Martha Spak not only hang from the walls of her latest gallery but in a few episodes of Season 4 of Netflix’s “House of Cards.” Luckily, reproductions are also available.

The bookstore Politics & Prose most likely needs no introduction. But for a primer, the new District Square store should do the trick. For a deeper dive, you can head to the original location on Connecticut Avenue. Classes and events will also be offered in this location.

Eat chocolate and save the poison dart frog. Who knew? Bars made by local Harper Macaw go back to the restoration of the Amazon Rainforest. The chocolate drops are wildly popular.

A D.C. institution, Hank’s Oyster Bar satisfies the urge for ocean delicacies with a raw bar and, for the undecided, a seafood plateau that samples all that lives beneath, including lobster, clams, oysters and shrimp. Yes, there are crab cakes and New England clam chowder, too.

The Anthem is already being hyped among bands as one of the best venues to play. That must be why the calendar for November and December alone is packed with St. Vincent, Morrisey, Erykah Badu, Bon Iver, The Lumineers, Odesza, and The National—and that doesn’t even cover it.

Special events in December include a boat parade and ice skating.
