Beach Inventions

What’s making us happy today?

Another kind of board. Board activities rule in Southern California. Just down the highway from Orange County’s self-proclaimed “Surf City USA” (Huntington Beach) is the skimboard capital: Laguna Beach. In the 1920s, the sport was invented by ingenious lifeguards who used pieces of wood to skim quickly across the water’s surface patrolling. Watch the pros display their skills at Aliso Beach, learn yourself, or time a visit for a competition, like Green Eggs and Am (April 12).

A coffee disguised as Guinness. Applause to Verve Coffee Roasters. It not only uses top-quality, fair-trade beans, but it introduced America to cold-brewed coffee from nitro tap—all from its humble HQ in Santa Cruz. Nitro tap, for those not up on chemistry goodness, is the secret sauce that makes beer foamy. Now imagine that creaminess in cold-brewed coffee. Um, yeah. Time for a coffee break.
