Are You a Chicken Voyeur?

A quirky bicycling tour rolls by cutting-edge “estates” in the Sacramento area.

Il Palazzo Gallina. Those three words, loosely translated, mean “the chickens that live here are royalty.” At least, the cluckers that are bedding down at this Versailles-of-chicken-coops address do seem well-tended.

But they aren’t the only ones in Davis, California. The city’s infamous Tour de Cluck bicycle loop is plotted around the locations of 13 unique hen houses that are throwing open chicken-wired doors on May 30. Chick marvels last year included the Coopacabana, Coop of the Rising Son, Coo Coop Ca Choo, and Parkside Peep Show.

To join 800 other participants on Tour de Cluck, rent wheels from Ken’s Bike, Ski and Board, including tandems. Open houses span Applied Eggonomics, Il Palazzo Gallina, and BM Farms, where the coop is a replica of the main residence. Coop-docents are on hand to discuss the joys of raising a flock. Eggs-cited yet? The coop crawl committee, with its very own chairperson, mother hen Diane Pierzinski, is hoping for a grand turnout of peeps.
