Amazon makes its mark on Chicago.
The role of the cozy indie bookstore, its shelves filled with rare finds and thoughtful recommendations highlighted by staff, shall always be cherished. But when hanging out in Lakeview, it’s worth popping into Amazon Books’ controversial brick-and-mortar locale, the first in the Midwest, for the novelty alone. Devoid of warmth, it’s a sprawling bookstore-meets-electronics shop selling coffee, appliances, and nearly 4,000 titles based on customer ratings. Like it or not, such a clean-lined, corporate, algorithm-inspired enterprise resonates with many a time-strapped consumer.
