A Cheeseburger That’ll Make You Laugh

Chicago’s Billy Goat Tavern is still making cheezborgers and cheeps.

cheeseburger

You don’t come to Billy Goat Tavern and order the ham sandwich. This is Greek immigrant Sam Sianis’ neighborhood joint. It’s all about the juicy cheeseburger on a toasted Kaiser bun—as John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, and Bill Murray attested in a famous Saturday Night Live skit almost 40 years ago (January 28, 1978) that channeled the owner and employees’ thick Greek accents and insistence on every patron ordering cheezborgers and Coke. No fries. Only cheeps. It catapulted the Michigan Avenue spot to fame. Murray and Don Novello (of Father Guido Sarducci fame) stop in for lunch when in Chicago.
