Joie de Vivre Hospitality Announces Name for Historic J-Street Project

Sacramento's First Luxury Boutique Hotel Captures the Essence of 'Community'

San Francisco, February 26, 2007 - Taking inspiration and input from the community that is Sacramento, Joie de Vivre Hospitality (JdV) announced today that the name for its historic J Street luxury boutique hotel will be 'The Citizen Hotel.'

"We've created more than three dozen hotels across the state, but never before have we spent as much time talking to the members of the community about what kind of hotel they'd like to see us create. This grass roots process helped us realize that there's something special about the nature of having a voice in the greater Sacramento community," said CEO Chip Conley. "The Citizen is meant to be a true reflection of the community's voice for where Sacramento is going and we hope The Citizen will become a source of pride and joy for Sacramentans."

JdV's approach to this complete remodel is similar in concept to other design projects for which the company is known. Using a magazine (or hybrid of two) as the organizing principle for the hotel, Joie de Vivre has found that the words that would describe their model magazine also became a touchstone for the hotel's personality as well as their likely core customers. In the case of Sacramento's first luxury boutique hotel, the descriptive words that were derived from the chosen magazines are "authentic, influential, surprising, eclectic, and all-American." The name 'The Citizen Hotel' captures the spirit of these words and the personality in an almost classic American, 'Jimmy Stewart' kind of way.

Centrally located in downtown Sacramento, The Citizen Hotel will make its home in the historic former Cal Western Life building on the corner of 10th and J Streets. Featuring a mansard roof, soaring ceilings and marble walls will be refurbished into a stylish boutique hotel. The 197-room property will also include 11,000 feet of meeting space, five staggeringly luxurious penthouses, a striking ballroom and a 3,000-square-foot terrace overlooking the state capitol. JdV is in joint venture with Rubicon Partners on this historic adaptive reuse project which is expected to open summer, 2008.
