Joie de Vivre Gives

Giving back to the community has always been a cornerstone of Joie de Vivre, which is why one of our five core values is to have "a connection and responsibility to our community."

Joie de Vivre has always been very involved in the communities in which our hotels are located. Our hotels are given an annual goal of how much money they should donate throughout the year to local causes. Connecting to our community is so important to us that our General Managers are evaluated on this donation metric, along with employee satisfaction, customer satisfaction, and profitability. This past year, nearly every Joie de Vivre hotel surpassed that goal; some hotels doubled and tripled it! Each hotel has built strong relationships in their neighborhood and community and does whatever they can to support surrounding non-profit organizations, and those in need.

In 2010 alone, Joie de Vivre hotels donated a total of over $1.3 million to local organizations, in the form of gift certificates, cash donations, in-kind donations, and events. We continue to take a grassroots approach to philanthropy, staying true to our entrepreneurial roots, rallying behind causes and organizations that inspire our employees. Because of that, we are able to help organizations who may not receive much attention or support from the broader community.

Additionally, every year, we plan volunteer activities and events where our employees can come together as a group to support local organizations. We plan four main events per year—one per quarter—and the turnout is overwhelming! Joie de Vivre employees long for the opportunity to give back to the community and now we have formalized a way to do that together.

For five years running, Joie de Vivre has partnered with Surfrider Foundation to clean the beach up and down the California Coast, on all the beaches where we have hotels: San Francisco's Ocean Beach, Santa Cruz, Venice Beach, Huntington Beach, and soon in the Monterey Peninsula.

Every year, we participate in and are a sponsor of the AIDS WALK in both San Francisco and Los Angeles. Joie de Vivre employees raise money and come out with their families, friends, and dogs to get some exercise for a good cause.

We have partnered with San Francisco based non-profit A Good Idea for a few unique events which reach out to the homeless members of our community. A Good Day is an annual event where we invite about 75 homeless people for a really good day, whether it be a day of pampering, dinner, and dancing at one of our hotels, or a day of games, music and BBQ in the park. Joie de Vivre and A Good Idea volunteers come together to show these guests a good time. By the end of the events, it’s hard to know who is a guest and who is a volunteer!

During the holiday season, we volunteer at the Glide Kitchen in San Francisco, serving breakfast as part of their Daily Free Meals program. Glide serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, 365 days a year, and serves 2000 meals each day! We are honored to be a small part in serving the community. Here’s the group after a recent breakfast shift.

You Can Make a Difference: $1 Opt Out Program

As an extension of Joie de Vivre Gives, many of our hotels participate in the You Can Make a Difference program. The primary objective is to engage our guests by giving them the option to add an additional $1 of their total bill for each night they stay with us. Guests are able to opt out of this program at check-out. The money all goes directly to each hotel’s philanthropy partner, and to date has raised over $500,000.
