This clinically oriented seminar will offer an exploration of Jung’s notion of the psychoid unconscious, weaving it together with practical considerations of alchemical principles as they are useful –psychologically, physically and spiritually – in our psychotherapy and analytic work with our patients.
The crossroads of matter and spirit is the locus of psychological work and change in the psyche. In Marie Louise von Franz’s volume, Alchemy: An Introduction to the Symbolism and the Psychology, she speaks of a “secret duality” in the object: “We are still faced with two unsolved mysteries which in a strange way are interdependent though we do not yet know how. They are psyche and matter.”
Jung referred to this imponderable dimension of experience as the psychoid unconscious. This is where material and non-material reality coexist and intertwine, where complexes reside and where the sequelae of trauma are woven into the psyche. For true healing to occur, energies must shift at this level of the organism. Jung’s explication of alchemical principles can help us orient ourselves in this dimension of experience as we accompany our patients on their healing paths.
The complexities of the mind-body duality as it expresses itself in analysis will be discussed in relation to case material, including a series of dreams. I will review Jung’s notion of the psychoid unconscious and fundaments of Jung’s researches into alchemy. Readings will include selections from Jung’s writings on alchemy as well as from Marie Louise von Franz and Edward Edinger. Participants will acquire more confidence in utilizing these ideas in their everyday work, and will be encouraged to bring in their own case material.
