When we created the Hotel Rex®, we imagined the famed Hotel Algonquin in New York City with its arts & literary legacy. The West Coast was missing such a place and over the past dozen years, the Rex has become the crossroads for creative people from all walks of life.
You'll see an occasional author book signing in the lobby, maybe a poetry reading, or live jazz on Fridays in the library bar. Even the art in this place has a story as the provocative large drawings of great American writers and artists in the Salon were created by one of the bellmen within our company. People appreciate the clever and worldly nature of the Rex which allows it to be slightly hip without being pretentious.

Located where North Beach and Chinatown come together, Lawrence Ferlinghetti's bookstore was the heartbeat of the Beat movement with poetry readings and constant happenings.
Many locals don't know how beautiful this place is with its bay views, Italianate architecture, historic Diego Rivera mural, anarchist art, and healthy cafe.
California College of the Arts
The California College of the Arts has partnered with the Hotel Rex to bring you the Memoir Writer's Studio on May 27th - 31st, 2008. Additional information can be found here.
Really more of a bar than a cafe, though their coffee drinks are a specialty, this places really oozes character.
