A Little for A Lot (ALittle4ALot.com) was founded by Dr. Debra Matityahu and her daughter Arielle Matityahu. After visiting Kenya and working with Dr. Hillary Mabeya and Carolyne Mabeya, they came up with the idea of helping girls to return to school and vocational training programs to help the girls/women gain financial independence after undergoing fistula repair surgery.
Obstetric fistula is a hole in the birth canal that is caused by prolonged and obstructed labor. If untreated, a woman with obstetric fistula will experience constant and uncontrollable leakage of urine and/or feces. In addition to physical injuries, many women with fistula suffer humiliation, isolation, and stigma as a result of the smell and constant leakage. It is not uncommon for women with fistula to work alone, eat alone, and sleep alone.
According to the World Health Organization, between 50,000 to 100,000 women worldwide are affected by obstetric fistula each year exclusively in resource-poor settings of Africa and South Asia.
