MTT explores here the maturing Beethoven, as well as his continuing influence. In An die ferne Geliebte—the first-ever song cycle—Beethoven gives passionate voice to the painful longing for his “distant beloved.” Absolute Jest, Adam’s celebration of the SFS’s 100th anniversary, is based on fragments from Beethoven’s immortal late string quartets. Beethoven’s vivacious and eminently hummable Fourth Symphony bridges his Third and Fifth Symphonies, two of the most famous ever written.
