For more than 20 years, the Los Angeles-based Josephson Institute of Ethics has worked to improve the ethical quality of society. Our CHARACTER COUNTS! program has changed millions of lives and works with organizations ranging from local schools to giant corporations.
On Friday, May 3, from 2:00 to 4:30, the Josephson Institute is pleased to share a FREE session featuring methods and strategies for improving decision-making and building communities of character.
An accomplished panel of presenters will discuss how using The Six Pillars of Character® (trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, citizenship) is the key to any business or organization’s long-term growth and success.

DN. Mario A. Guerra – Mayor of the City of Downey, CA.
As Mayor of Downey, CA, Mario Guerra has helped create over 6,000 new jobs for the city and has led the introduction of CHARACTER COUNTS! to the community. Guerra helped facilitate the revitalization and planning of Downtown Downey and started Downey's first Green Task Force. He and his wife Ann are co-founders of Angel Tree for Downey, which last year served over 275 children during the holidays.
Dr. Gary Smit
A dynamic presenter and trainer, Mr. Smit provides educators and businesses with relevant strategies to use in building communities and schools of character. He is a CHARACTER COUNTS! trainer at home and abroad, where he’s contributed to the program’s expansion and success in Puerto Rico and South America. Previously, he was a superintendent for 25 years in Illinois and Wisconsin and has also worked as a principal and teacher.
Christina Smithhisler - Director of Programs for Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority
As Director of Programs, Ms. Smithhisler develops leadership and character education programming for the membership to achieve the organizational mission of developing strong womanly character, high standards of conduct and a perpetual bond of friendship. She lives in Zionsville, IN with her husband and twin daughters.
