With an area of 4,766 acres, Andrew Molera is Big Sur’s largest State Park, so there's a lot to explore. Andrew Molera State Park is an excellent place for hiking, horseback riding, bicycling, beach combing, surfing, and angling. In 1992, the Ventana Wilderness Society established The Big Sur Ornithology Lab here- a research and education center, as well as a bird observatory. The park boasts 20 miles of trails that give hikers access to the Big Sur River mouth and estuary, the driftwood-strewn Molera beach, as well as other vibrant ecosystems. A picnic overlooking the Big Sur River estuary is a good idea after a morning hike. Directions: From Ventana, drive north on Highway 1 for 7 miles. The park lies at the junction of Highway 1 and Old Coast Road. The entrance to the park is on the west side of the highway. For non-campers, the park is day-use only. Biking is permitted on Ridge, Beach, Trail Camp, and Creamery Meadow trails. Horses are not allowed on the Hidden, Headlands, or Spring Trails, or in Trail Camp. To reserve a guided horseback tour, contact the front desk, or call Molera Trail Rides directly at (831) 625-8664.
