The historic Don Lee Cadillac building from the 1920's was renovated in 1989 with an addition containing 14 state of the art movie screens. The original ornate Beaux Arts style Cadillac showroom is now the lobby of the AMC 1000 Van Ness theaters. Also added to the building were 53 condos and a Crunch Gym. The Architects of the original building - Weeks and Day - were well know for their ornate theaters and hotels. They were the architects for the Fox California Theater in San Jose, the Oakland Fox Theater, the Biltmore Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles, the Sir Francis Drake Hotel and Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco. It is a treat to watch a movie with modern plush seating - cup holders, arms that fold up and away for sofa style seating and backs that comfortably recline - in such a historic building.
