South Florida was once a paradise for those over 55.
Was this the start of the South Beach diet? One might think that by looking at the photo. What you see is the “Gray Wave,” the migration of retirees to South Florida. It eventually led to the building boom in Miami Beach. Heavily awarded photographer Flip Schulke was commissioned by the EPA to document these retirees in the Sunshine State. Schulke, a freelancer, is best known for his shot of Cassius Clay, aka Muhammad Ali, working out underwater. It appeared on the cover of Life magazine.
