5 things I love about the Los Angeles Area:
Southern California lifestyle, the entertainment industry, the weather, the diversity of the people, All the different areas of LA and the hidden treasures you find there
My favorite local hidden treasure you shouldn't miss:
Silverlake/Los Feliz - great restaurants, bars and art galleries - edgy and eclectic. Griffith Park – hiking trails, great views, bikes for rent. Point Dume in Malibu – great beach, rugged cliffs. Downtown LA - the toy district, Olivera Street and Chinatown.
My perfect day spent in the San Francisco Bay Area:
Eastside day - Start out with brunch - a huge Vegetarian Mess at Millie’s in Silverlake on Sunset Blvd. Great biscuits but don’t you dare pull out your cell phone. Step out the door for a quick jaunt through Sunset Junction to check out the mid century furniture, vintage clothes and funky shops. Walk it off with a hike on the trails in Griffith Park up to Mt. Hollywood, enjoy the views of the Hollywood sign, the Angeles Mountains and the ocean, with a possible side trip to the Observatory. Follow with an iced coffee and over the top dessert on the patio at Alcove on Hillhurst in Los Feliz, maybe catch a celebrity or two slumming it, then onto a movie at the grand old Vista Theatre on Sunset. Or check out a local indie band at Spaceland (where Beck got his start) or hit one of the film festivals always happening in Hollywood. Top it off with a night cap at the Good Luck Bar with its dark and mysterious Asian décor or kick it on patio at Silverlake’s classy Edendale Grill - a beautifully restored pumphouse with an entertainment industry vibe. If I’m still standing - back to Sunset Junction for a late night salmon diner at The Kitchen (open until 3AM) or a burger and a hot fudge sundae at Fred 62 in Los Feliz (open all night)
On the Westside – Head up the gorgeous PCH (Pacific Crest Highway) to Malibu and hit a remote beach either Point Dume or Point Mugu, walk in the surf, rent a kayak, grab some seafood along the PCH at one of the many restaurants, check out the Malibu Farmer’s market on Sundays, head back to Venice Beach for the Sunset, cruise the boardwalk and enjoy the freak show, grab a beer and some cheap eats beachside and later hit the Temple Bar or Zanzibar in Santa Monica to dance and hear the latest DJ’s get down to an Eastern meets urban vibe.
