5 things I love about the San Francisco Bay Area:
The overall sense of wellbeing in Mill Valley with Mt. Tamalpais (the Sleeping Lady) offering good its good Feng Shui. 2. Surreal views of the city from the Marin Headlands 3. Hiking or mountain biking to Muir Beach 4. Miles of protected bike paths, especially the route along the water's edge from Mill Valley to Sausalito or Tiburon. 5. Village Music Record Store (9 E Blithedale Avenue, Mill Valley, 388-7400) since the fifties this store has been the haven for finding original jazz on vinyl.
My favorite local hidden treasure you shouldn't miss:
Point Bonita Lighthouse in the Marin Headlands. A true diamond in the rough, this still operational lighthouse is perched a half mile hike over the sea cliffs with head-on views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the city. I discovered that the public could visit back in high school, when our conservation crew built the pedestrian guardrail along the narrow trail. I remember watching the cargo ships chugging by the point, so close it felt like you could just jump on board and head out to sea. It's amazing and still feels undiscovered. There are tours of the lighthouse on Saturday, Sunday and Mondays.
My perfect day spent in the San Francisco Bay Area:
For a perfectly active day in Marin, I'd grab the mountain bike and begin by fueling-up and hanging out with the other riders at CU (locals call it the center of the universe due to the number of residents who are drawn to this highly caffeinated center of town in Mill Valley). Then crank the gears down and ride up the mountain bike trails behind the Mill Valley Library (375 Throckmorton Avenue 389-4292, which is a great place to read outside under the redwoods!). Climb up to the Mountain Home Inn (810 Panoramic Highway, Mill Valley, 381.9000) for lunch and great Mt. Tam views. You feel like you're in Switzerland in the summer! Zip downhill along Mt. Tam's trails through Muir Woods to Muir Beach ride up the organic Green Gulch Farm (1601 Shoreline Hwy 383-3134). If there is room at one of the meditation classes, join in with the Buddhists. Or sit on Muir Beach - Marin's dog and clothing optional friendly beach and soak up the sun. Head toward Tiburon on the Marin Headland trails through Tennessee Valley. Look for bobcats, as this area has one of the largest concentrations of the shy cats in the country. Take the Mill Valley bike path along Richardson Bay to the Tiburon bike path. Enjoy the sunset views to the west. Hang up the helmet and have a margarita outside on the top deck at Guaymas (5 Main Street, 435-6300) next to the Waters Edge Hotel (25 Main Street, 789-5999). Either see a new movie at the historic Tiburon Playhouse (40 Main Street, 435-1234) or go back to Mill Valley for oysters bingo and dinner at Buckeye Roadhouse (15 Shoreline Highway, 331-2600). Go see some live music, usually good blues and celebrities like Bonnie Raitt at Mill Valley's Sweetwater (153 Throckmorton Avenue, 388-2820)
