- 5 things I love about the San Francisco Bay Area:
- a) The physical beauty of San Francisco b) I have always felt totally "comfortable" here like the city "fits" me c) The huge diversity of the city d) The enormous variety of restaurants e) How accessible everything is—we can be anywhere in the city in less than 20 minutes.
- My favorite local hidden treasure you shouldn't miss:
- The Wave Organ. We discovered this little known spot not too long after we moved here from New York in 1977. The "organ" consists of a number of pipes that pick up sounds from the Bay. It's really very interesting. You reach it by going through the San Francis Yacht Club parking lot and past the Golden Gate Yacht Club to a gate. Walk around the gate and out to the tip of this small peninsula and there you are!
- My perfect day spent in the San Francisco Bay Area:
- When I was in college, I worked summers as a Tour Director for a company in Chicago taking people all over the United States and Canada. So I look at a day in the city that way. I might start with breakfast at a neighborhood café like Ella's (500 Presidio, 441-5669)or even Sears (439 Powell, 986-1160) and then spend the next hour or two in a quick guided tour of the City, just to get a sense of where things are located and a "feel" for what makes San Francisco so special. Lunch would be at someplace like Mission Rock (817 China Basin 626-5355) or a taqueria in the Mission or perhaps some Dim Sum or possibly any of the several small restaurants on Belden Alley between Bush and Pine. The afternoon probably would be tailored to the interests of my friend but might include MOMA (151 Third, 357-4000) or the Ansel Adams Gallery, (801 Howard 495-7000) the Exploratorium (Marina Boulevard and Lyon 563-7337) if there are kids, or, maybe, in really nice weather the Marin Headlands and Sausalito. If we did go to Marin then I like to end up late in the afternoon at Sam's (27 Main Street, Tiburon, 435-4527) on the upper deck for drinks. Dinner is always tough so I make my friends talk about what kind of food they like and then choose accordingly. For example, if someone says "Asian" I might respond with The House of Nanking (919 Kearny; 415-421-1429) or Thanh Long way out in the Outer Richmond (4101 Judah, 665-1146). For Italian, the choices range from Jackson Fillmore in Pacific Heights (2506 Fillmore, 346-5288) to Delfina in the Mission, (3621 18th Street, 552-4055), or Acquerello (1722 Sacramento Street, 567-5432). Late, it might be fun to stop for coffee someplace in North Beach; there are several coffeehouses on Columbus and Grant including Café Trieste (601 Vallejo, 362-6739). Enjoy!!
