What do I do to make a buck?:
I edit books on art, travel, and the environment
5 things I love about the San Francisco Bay Area:
The WPA murals in Coit Tower
The Ferry Building (foot of Market Street) any day of the week, but especially the sensory overload of Saturday morning, when farmers set up shop on all sides of the building and fabulous food is all around.
The mysterious ruins of the Sutro Baths, once a public bathhouse on the ocean next to the Cliff House
Macondray Lane, a two-block pedestrian alley/street on Russian Hill that was the inspiration for Barbary Lane of Tales of the City fame.
(For rainy days) the Castro Theater (429 Castro Street), a 1920s film palace that still has its original Wurlitzer organ.
My favorite local hidden treasure you shouldn't miss:
The Potato-wrapped seabass at Isa Restaurant (3324 Steiner; 415-9588), and the Lyon Street Steps if you like the challenge
My perfect day spent in the San Francisco Bay Area:
First we'd explore the splendors of my neighborhood, the lovely Marina District, beginning with a generous breakfast at Judy's Café or the venerable Bechelli's diner, both on Chestnut Street. We might browse a bit in the shops along Chestnut, then stroll the six blocks out to the Bay and behold the Marina Green, with its yachts bobbing in the water opposite magnificent mansions, and the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance. We'd enter the Presidio, a former army base that's now a national park, and stroll along beautiful sandy Crissy Field (once an asphalt-covered airfield, now a jogging/walking path and a haven for birds) to the Park Service's Warming Hut for a tasty and healthful lunch, and perhaps a gander at the well-chosen selection of books and other worthy items in the gift shop. Next stop: the endearing Presidio Pet Cemetery with its white picket fence, then George Lucas's Letterman Digital Arts Center (home to Industrial Light and Magic), where the cafe has great gelato (...oh the apricot chardonnay...), with stops to appreciate the beautiful landscaping of the Presidio grounds, especially the water features and the Yoda fountain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letterman_Digital_Arts_Center). As we exit the Chestnut Gate, we'll veer over a few blocks to see the marvelous 1916 Palace of Fine Arts. Then we'll pause for an interesting energy drink, perhaps involving wheatgrass, at Lettus Organic on Steiner as we contemplate which of my five favorite places (see above) we want to visit with the rest of our perfect day.
