- 5 things I love about the San Francisco Bay Area:
- Breathtaking views! Whether from the Marin Headlands, above or below the Golden Gate Bridge, from the Twin Peaks or a cable car or Treasure Island, this city has the most incredible vistas and it looks fabulous in any season. Tea at the Japanese Tea Gardens in Golden Gate Park. Union Square. Shopping and dining galore! Hiking along the scenic coastal trail from Point Lobos all the way to the Golden Gate Bridge. Ferry ride to Sausalito, Tiburon and Angel Island.
- My favorite local hidden treasure you shouldn't miss:
- San Francisco is a gourmand's paradise! The city offers the best of every possible cuisine and it is practically sacrilege to name one restaurant and skip others. However, one overlooked place is Khan Toke Thai House (2937 Geary Boulevard, 668-6654) Meals are served in the traditional Northern Thai style where seating is low and both the cuisine as well as the décor are quite authentic.
- My perfect day spent in the San Francisco Bay Area:
- San Francisco offers a myriad of things to do. I never tire of riding the cable car or walking up the city's steep hills, which offer incredible views from every corner. However, my ideal day in San Francisco would start by spending some time around Crissy Field and Fort Mason in the Marina. Union Street is arguably the best street in the city to window-shop the hours away, and, a few blocks down, Chestnut Street has an incredible variety of high-quality restaurants catering to every palate. Therefore, I would have lunch at either Café Marimba (2317 Chestnut Street 776-1506), which features regional cuisine from Oaxaca or just grab a custom-built salad at Pluto's (3258 Scott, 775-8867). The afternoon can be spent browsing around the city's architectural grand dame, the Palace of Fine Arts (3301 Lyon Street, 421-8497) and later, a leisurely walk on the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge would muster up enough appetite for dinner in San Francisco's "Little Italy". For that, I'll head to North Beach and dine at Steps of Rome (348 Columbus Avenue, 986-6480). The staff at this cozy Italian restaurant provides free entertainment by belting out famous tunes and thus resulting in a traffic jam on the sidewalk! A nice pastry and latte at the Caffé Greco (423 Columbus, 397-6261) is the perfect end to an evening in North Beach. Probably time to call it a day but if I have some energy left, I might head to the City Lights bookstore, (261 Columbus Avenue 362-8193) to browse through some good reads.
